What this is

Ionnsaich is a free tool for learning Scottish Gaelic, made by CD Media, Inc. It translates between English and Gaelic, shows pronunciation, speaks phrases aloud, and offers flashcards, quizzes and conversation practice.

By using it you agree to these terms. If you do not, please do not use it.

Accuracy — please read this one

Ionnsaich contains a hand-checked phrasebook, marked “Verified phrase”. Anything without that mark is an automatic translation and has not been checked.

Automatic translations can be wrong in ways a learner cannot detect — grammatically plausible, confidently presented, and still incorrect. Treat them as a starting point, never as an authority.

Do not rely on any translation from this site for anything permanent or consequential — tattoos, engravings, headstones, signage, legal or official documents, or published material — without having it checked by a fluent speaker. We provide links to Am Faclair Beag for exactly this reason, and we accept no responsibility for the consequences of relying on an unverified translation.

Pronunciation guidance leans towards mainstream Hebridean Gaelic. Dialects vary considerably, and a form correct in one area may be unusual in another.

Cost

Ionnsaich is free to use, with or without an account. We may change that in future, but we will not start charging for something you have already done.

Accounts

An account is optional and exists only to sync your progress between devices. You are responsible for keeping access to the email address you sign in with, since that is how you get back in.

You can delete your account at any time from the account bar; it removes your account and your synced progress permanently. We may suspend or remove an account that is being used to abuse the service.

Acceptable use

Please do not:

• use the service to generate or distribute unlawful, harassing or deceptive material
• attempt to break, overload, or circumvent limits on the service or the APIs behind it
• scrape or bulk-extract the phrasebook or audio for redistribution
• present machine translations from this site as professional or certified translation

Things outside our control

Ionnsaich depends on third-party services for hosting, translation and speech. If one of them is unavailable, degraded, or changes its terms, parts of the app may stop working. We will do what we reasonably can, but we do not guarantee availability or uninterrupted service.

No warranty, and limits on liability

Ionnsaich is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of content.

To the fullest extent the law allows, CD Media, Inc. is not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the service, including loss arising from reliance on a translation. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Your content

Text you type or speak remains yours. We do not claim ownership of it and do not use it to train anything. It is sent to our translation and speech providers only so they can answer your request — see the privacy policy for who those are.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio and the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled by the state or federal courts located in Ohio, and you agree to their jurisdiction.
